Find Your Inner Hero! Rick Hansen Terry Fox Caitlin slavik

The theme for BCSLC 2009 is represented in our conference slogan "Find Your Inner Hero" because that is exactly what we hope each delegate will do during our four day heroic conference. Rick Hansen found his inner hero when he began his world-wide "Man in Motion" rolling journey in support of spinal cord research. Terry Fox found his inner hero when he decided to run the "Marathon of Hope" across Canada in a search for a cure to cancer. Caitlin Slavik, Kelowna Young Female Citizen of the Year in 2007, found her inner hero in her school-based work with our District's Lifesavers' Team, who come together each year to help build resiliency in our District's students. Lake Country student Alaina Podmorrow found her inner hero when she heard of the plight of women in Afghanistan and formed her influential group of Little Women for Little Women in Afghanistan. And Garrett Hickling of Kelowna, Canada's top wheelchair rugby player, found his inner hero while competing for our country in four Paralympic Games and bringing home a bronze medal from Beijing.

What do these five individuals have in common? One similarily is the fact that they are just ordinary people doing extraordinary things and that is what defines a hero. We don't start out being extraordinary and then evolve into a hero - we first plod along quite ordinarily until we find a passion, a cause, a mission that fuels us beyond belief and then we pursue it with passion and purpose and our efforts become extraordinary.

So where and in what action will you find your inner hero? What will bring the hero inside you to the surface for all the world to see and enjoy? Our conference is designed to inspire and drive you to search deep within your soul and heart to unleash your inner hero and bring out the best in you for the betterment of our communities, our Province, our Country and our World.
